Traipsing Through the Woods

LOOMIS NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION AREA

Johnny Beall Trail

Activity: Day Hike, Bushwhacking, Camping

2.5 miles, 365′ elevation gain, duration 2 hours, rated Easy to Not So Much…

Date: 8/6-7/22

To escape the heat from the valley below I loaded up my 4Runner TRD Pro and found myself ‘Pursuing Balance Through Adventure’ up on a mountain in North-Central Washington. With some fantastic views my capable rig maneuvered the incline up through the woods to Cold Creek Campground a nice little spot with a National Park style pit toilet and multiple camp spots.

I enjoyed a quiet night camped in my rig and having the whole area to myself. The next morning I was intrigued by the very cool wooden map display and decided to take a hike on Johnny Beall Trail, which left from this spot.

The PNW woods were beautiful, but the trail was not maintained and from the looks of things this untamed wilderness path appeared as if no one had been on it for years. It was hard to follow and much of the time it just seemed like I was just “Traipsing Through the Woods”, which there is certainly nothing wrong with that, but I was hoping for a nice trail to wander. My path was increasingly less of a hike and more of a bushwhacking expedition. I heard this trail called an ‘lodgepole luge course’ which was a perfect description of this forest filled with downed lodgepole pines. I climbed over down trees, ducked under them, and tried to go around. Finally as the hike completely deteriorated into a jungle gym of climbing over dead trees and never quite sure if I was on course as much of the time there didn’t seem to be even remnants of a trail being there, I bailed on the idea.

Okay what the heck left that print?

I then drove a short distance to a cool viewpoint just up the dirt road from the camp area. Boy of boy is this place beautiful.

Then as I made my way back I swung by Chopaka Lake which was stunning and a great representation of why remote mountain lakes are so enchanting.

I wasn’t born in the woods… But I got there as fast as I could.

Thanks for practically bushwhacking through the woods with me. I may not have been able to enjoy the nice trail hike that I set out for, but hiking days are always better than office days. Besides there is a certain charm to something wild and natural when you find yourself ‘Pursing Balance Through Adventure”. The premise of PBTA is finding yourself during a journey of self discovery, to gain a feeling of peace and contentment through the immersion of bold experiences in Nature. Liberty Creek and Edith Hansen Riding Trail Loop

LIBERTY LAKE REGIONAL PARK

LIBERTY LAKE

Activity: Day Hike

8.5 miles, 1374’ elevation gain, 4 hour duration, rated Moderate

Liberty Creek and Edith Hansen Riding Trail Loop is a beautiful spot with gorgeous forest in Liberty Creek. The creek added the natural sounds that relaxes one’s soul. I took the trail clockwise. The first half of the journey is switchbacks and is a rather steep climb.

There are some little waterfalls and the Boy Scouts constructed a cabin. The backside of this hike has a decline, but it also has a flattened out portion that would be good for biking.

When I was there Bear activity had been reported. While I was moving through a boggy area, that featured a stream through a heavy thicket, I heard careful methodical plodding steps in the water and mind you I saw very few people during my adventure. It could maybe have been a person, but why? It made me wonder.

This gorgeous area has splendid panoramic vistas at the top with plenty of outstanding peak-a-boo views along the trail through proper PNW woods featuring so much green. There are ruins of an old cabin on a spur trail on the way up. At the top is a refurbished structure of the Fire Lookout.

Ancient ruins of the old cabin.

This hike is at Sherman’s Pass a place that has been important as a throughway for hunters, loggers, trappers, pioneers, and military expeditions. Native people have traveled these same routes for as long as there have been people in the North West and that is a long time.

OLALLIE STATE PARK

NORTH BEND

Activity: Day Hike, Chasing Waterfalls

4 miles, 1165′ elevation gain, 2.5 hour duration, rated Moderate

The forest is plush with thick greenery. The trails well kept and simply nature at it’s finest, but the only bummer to me was this particular trek starts our on a gravel road with power lines. The worst part was that the journey parallels the freeway and the traffic noise is always within ear shot until you reach the falls and that is where the magic is.

There is no question where the magic begins. A wonderful and proper PNW trail, green as green can be, thundering, tumbling, cascading water to set all the senses on overload. The music of the water flowing in the stream across smooth rounded rocks leading to a big bountiful falls. The sights, the sounds, the mist from the crashing water, the scent of fresh damp earth it is so powerful in it’s rejuvenation of the soul. What can I say, “Ya’ just gotta’ luv’ it!”

Twin Falls

You will need a Washington Discover Pass for parking in this area. There are other routes to the falls. This particular passage is a little longer and more rugged. Since there is not a lot of signage to the falls from this location it would be helpful to have downloaded a GPS map such as I did as you can see from the picture. Also keep in mind this is a very popular hike, Summer weekends would be the most crowded.

Waterfalls are said to symbolize the flow of life.  Notice how nothing is able to stop in its fast flowing current.  They remind us to let go and move with the ever changing flow of life.   To stop and reflect, in order to find the calmness in the chaos. And, to be fearless chasing after the unknown.

Thanks for chasing waterfalls with me, a favorite activity when I am ‘Pursuing Balance Through Adventure’. Listening to the sound of the water as it plunges down the rock face and into the collecting pool below is so relaxing. A peaceful feeling of tranquility takes root. This is in direct contrast to the hustle and bustle anxious feeling that a fast paced world leaves us with much of the time. Balance from wondrous outings like chasing waterfalls and thus experiencing Nature’s reward is so important to quality of life. This my friends is what ‘Pursuing Balance Through Adventure’ is all about. Stay with me for more adventures that I expect will provide ideas and inspiration so that you will hit the trail and experience that Balance that we all need as part of our soul’s diet. Nice way to be communing with Nature beside a beautiful lake along a ADA access pathway of wild flowers and wonderful trees with views of Rattlesnake Ledge. Well, on the day I was there it was a misty moody Pacific North West day. I only got a fading glimpse of the mountain.

Thanks for joining me at this lovely spot with it’s tranquil lake, the graceful geese, and the misty clouds encapsulating the mountain, all leading to that peaceful easy feel’n that we sometimes seek when the world, with it’s hustle and bustle, gets us down. Nature can take the Humpty Dumpty pieces and put them back together again, something all the King’s horses and all the King’s men couldn’t do. Rattlesnake Lake was a perfect setting for relaxation and reflection, and for me this came right after climbing up to Rattlesnake Ledge which was also peaceful, but certainly not easy. I travel all over this great West of ours ‘Pursuing Balance Through Adventure’ and striving to bring that inspiration to others. If you mossy on up to the menu you will discover this intention. The menu is categorized mostly by location, but sometimes by activity. While you plan your next escape to Nature also plan out your Adventure Wear. Rosario Beach

DECEPTION PASS STATE PARK

Activity; Day Hike, Beautiful Vista

Date 6-15-22

Alec and I enjoyed one last outing together in the PNW. Deception Pass State Park is one of the most popular of Washington’s State Parks. The Park is over 3,800 acres of luscious old growth forest, surrounding by rugged coastline on Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands connected by the Deception Pass Bridge.

This was our third outing in Deception Pass State Park. We had earlier completed North Beach on Whidbey Island and Pass Lake Loop Hike on Fidalgo Island.

This short hike at Rosario Beach has a nice picnic area, bathrooms and a grassy area for family to enjoy. The little hike I took alone, because my teen opted to just kick back by the rig, was both cultural as well as a scenic.

I went out on the point that was a sort of peninsula with Rosario Beach adjacent to the North and Sharpe Cove just to the East off of Bowman Bay. The trail to the point was rather steep in places and there was more than one way to go so I pretty much wandered around taking it all in. The scenic waterways could be enjoyed from high on a cliff, but watch your step.

There was an entire squad of First Responders there while I was hiking about practicing their belaying and cliff rescue skills giving me a feeling they picked this spot for a reason.

Certain parts of this area are dangerous. As a matter of a fact, there was a large team of first responders practicing different life saving techniques on the cliff there.

The center piece of the area is the Maiden of Deception Pass Totem Pole. The carving depicts the story of Ko-Kwal-alwoot, a legend of the Samish Native American Tribe.

My son Alec and I celebrating being together in the PNW for almost a month of Adventures before he
headed off with buddies to Cancun celebrating his graduation from the Army and Navy Academy.

Thanks for joining Alec and I- while I was ‘Pursuing Balance Through Adventure’ and Alec was just kicking back by the rig, (being a little hiked out I suppose, lol). When you are looking at all of that gorgeous water you can’t help but have a feeling of calm envelop you, which is some of that Balance this website speaks about. Nature can do that, bring things into perspective, adding some Balance to an otherwise stressed out, hurry up, do this, do that existence that is modern life. I am sure those early people stood on this spot as well taking in all of the beauty of Nature and needing that little break as they struggled to find food, and shelter. There is more adventure to be had in the great state of Washington so I invite you to stick with me by doing this: LIKE. COMMENT, FOLLOW and SHARE. If you go to the menu above you will discover that PBTA travels not only all around Washington, but all over the West seeking Balance and Adventure. WHIDBEY ISLAND

Activity: Day Hike, Beach Stroll

2 miles, 118′ elevation gain, 1 hour duration, rated Moderate

This wonderful little hike is on Whidbey Island just across a narrow strait from Fidalgo Island. The hike is in the Deception Pass State Park and you will need an Adventure Pass. This hike meanders through a wooded area with gorgeous peak-a-boo views of the water. There are many little offshoot paths to wander around this area. Eventually the path ends up heading to the Deception Pass Bridge that spans the two islands.

Walk in the woods with peak-a-boo views of the strait.

My son Alec and I walked across the Deception Pass Bridge as well as it provided an excellent vantage point with which to view the two islands, the woods, beach and the larger body of water the Straits of Juan de Fuca.

We strolled back along the rocky shoreline admiring the stately evergreens, grayed driftwood, and the blue-green water, where Alec worked on his rock skipping skill.

Friday Harbor

SAN JUAN ISLAND

Activity: Cruising, Sight Seeing, Touristing

Date: 6-14-22

This is a departure from this Blog’s theme of hiking and other outdoor physical activities in the natural wonder of wilderness, but the natural beauty of the San Juan Islands during our cruise over to San Juan Island’s Friday Harbor was so gorgeous it was an excursion I just had to write about.

My son Alec and I started our day early hopping a Ferry from Anacortes, on Fidalgo Island, to the quaint, charming and enchanting little Seaport of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. It was the first ferry ride for Alec and the boat was a great way to travel. We still can’t get over how that many cars can possibly fit on it. The ride over was comfortable and the views of the San Juan Islands were superb.

I think at some point I saw a magazine article about the tourist spot, Friday Harbor, and had always wanted to check it out. Plus it was a bit of a break in the action from all of the hikes we had been doing. We immersed ourselves in full Tourist Mood. We walked around a little checking out the landing and then had lunch outdoors over looking the harbor. Fine Pacific Northwest seafood was on our menu as I enjoyed a Salmon Reuben and Alec munched down on a Grilled Crab Sandwich. Quote from Alec, “That was scrumptious!”

We walked about the small township checking out shops, had some homemade ice cream. We really liked checking out some of the historic old homes during our walk. We topped off our visit with a stop at the Whaling Museum which was interesting before hopping back on the ferry and another scenic voyage back.

Ferry Landing at Friday Harbor.
“Like water which can clearly mirror the sky and the trees only so long as its surface is undisturbed,
the mind can only reflect the true image of the Self when it is tranquil and wholly relaxed.” -Indra Devi

Thanks for joining Alec and I on our excursion. It might not have been an invigorating hike, but it certainly was enjoyable. The natural beauty of the San Juan Islands certainly does provide some of that balance we talk about because it was really something. We will be back to rejuvenating hiking in our next episode of ‘Pursuing Balance Through Adventure’ Washington Hiking so as not to miss anything please COMMENT, LIKE, SHARE and FOLLOW. Carter Mountain

CARTER MOUNTAIN WILDLIFE PRESERVE

Activity: Day Hike

6 miles, 500’ elevation gain, >3 hour duration, rated Easy

Date: 7-11-22

I explored 4 miles of this hike with family friend Margaret. We trekked through a valley of sage brush dotted rolling hills, some with rugged rock outcroppings and the occasional conifer.  Even though it was July it has been a cooler and wetter season, so the hills were much more green than usual for this time of year. Meadows of desert flowers put forth their tender shoots, glorious blossoms of wild flowers such as Mariposa Lilies, a couple varieties of Daisies, and Lupin colorfully adorned our journey.  The birds sang, butterflies danced from pedal to pedal, the bees were busy buzzing, as a gentle breeze teased the tussles of wild grasses.

Carter Mountain Wildlife Unit is just south of Tonasket, Washington. It is made up of more than 2,240 acres. The preserve supports wildlife such as golden eagle, black bear, mule deer, cougar, and bobcat.  We discovered what we believe to be bear scat on the path so stay aware.

Summer has finally arrived.  The sun beating down, the rather hot temperatures along with the lack of any shade was a bit of a challenge for Margaret visiting from Anacortes, where it remains cool pretty much all of the time. So we cut the hike back a bit. When hiking in Summer be sure to wear light colors, a hat, and bring plenty of water. We were prepared In this way, so other than being a little red in the face Margaret soldiered on, and enjoyed her East of the Cascades nature hike through the scrub brush and lilies.

Peabody Creek Trail

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK

Activity: Visitor Center, Scenic Stop, Day Hike

2 miles, 200’ elevation gain, 1 hour duration, rated Easy

Date: 6-4-22

Into the Olympic Rainforest we go. What an exciting and alive place. There was so much expectation on the part of my 18 year old son, Alec, and myself of beauty and adventure in this, the rainiest place on earth. We planned on being here a week and to see as much as we could.

We were actually pretty lucky, I feel, as for the rainiest place on earth, there was only one day, which came near the end of our rainforest adventure, that it really rained, and I mean really rained on us. The rest of our time we experienced some sun, some dry cloudy skies and we also experienced mizzle, which NW Washington folks described to us as a mixture of mist and drizzle, okay… Back to the luck part. Many times right after we finished an outdoors adventure and loaded up the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro and started heading for our next destination in the Olympic National Park it would rain pretty good. Also, during the night the rain would come down after we were tucked away warm and dry in the rig for the night. So other than that one day, where we got soaked, we were indeed pretty lucky.

Located in the most NW corner of the US Lower 48 States
the 922,650 acre Olympic National Park has multiple regions:
Rugged Coastline, Alpine Forest, Rainforest, and the drier East side.

We made a couple stops on our way to gain more knowledge of what we were getting ourselves into by heading for the Olympic National Forest Wilderness Information Center near Port Angeles, Washington. We stopped and checked out a large old growth cedar tree transformed by Northwest Coast Tribes into a big Totem Pole.

When we arrived at the Olympic National Forest Wilderness Information Center they had a display of an old wooden cabin that might be typical of this area. Inside the center we found some interesting displays before we spoke to a Ranger whom helped us consider how best to spend this Father/Son – HS Grad time before before Alec leaves for college.

After getting some great ideas regarding our Olympic National Forest Journey, we decided to get in a quick hike, which conveniently began right at the center. The Peabody Creek Trail really shows right off the bat how spectacular and unusual the rain forest can be.

As we started our trek it was so unreal to see there was so much life that it was practically spilling out all over us. The green so vibrant, the damp ground and vegetation so fresh, so earthy. So much life that it was actually growing on top of each other. During our time in this National Park we saw many examples of new trees growing right out of, or on top of a dead one. Also, some trees were just so bizarre in the shapes and the strange ways that they grow. Then there is the mud… the Peabody Creek Trail was not too bad, you could maneuver around it pretty handily, but later we decided to try out the Peabody Creek Loop as well and that was more remote, more wild, and a lot more muddy. Finally we thought better of it when there was a portion that was not only all mud with a few roots, but steep. Adding the portion that we did of Peabody Creek Loop pretty much doubled our little outing. We would have been scrambling up this mud hill, perhaps on hands and knees, so we head back from which we had come.

A great start to this adventure of crazy trees, vines, plants, and green so much green, oh… and a big slug.

“The early summer light steps birdlike down the east slope of Green Mountain, and stirs low mists long the river into flight.” – Tim McNulty

Alec and I are so excited to bring to you the start of our journey into Olympic National Park. It is stunningly beautiful and a world so different from the desert on the ocean, which is our home of Southern California. “Seems It never rains in Southern California, seems I’ve often heard that kind of talk before, it never rains in California, but girl don’t they warn ya’ it pours, man it pours”, are famous lyrics from Albert Hammond. The song is about the struggle of someone coming to Hollywood to try and hit the big time, but at the same time if you take it more literally it does describe the weather in SoCal. It hardly every rains, which is evident by the horrible drought we have been experiencing for a couple decades, so when it does rain it comes all at once and neither the dry, hard ground or the infrastructure is ready for it and we get flooding. Conversely, in the rainforest “the rainiest place on earth” it mostly rains lightly, but pretty darn often, and if it isn’t raining it is drizzle, or mist, what a local referred to as ”mizzle”. What all that rain brings is an enchanting, bewitching place full of spectacle and wonder, but be forewarned bring your rain gear. Stick with Alec and I on this Vivid Green Escape from reality into the rainforest and you can do that easy enough by doing these simple steps: LIKE, COMMENT, FOLLOW and SHARE. If you go to the menu above you will see that PBTA travels extensively throughout these great Western States while ’Pursuing Balance Through Adventure’ in hopes to bring to you ideas and inspiration of how to take the ho hum, busy, work-a-day life that we all exist in, and balance that out with the beauty, and the magnificence of nature, Nature Heals.
